October Fishing Report

What an amazing time to be in The Eastern Sierras right now. Fishing is absolutely awesome, water flows are still perfect, the aspens are starting to light up everywhere, and no crowds! We are expecting our first blast of snow this week so fishing may get even better. This first storm will really get the beatis popping on all of our local rivers. As far as our local rivers, I have been spending most of my time guiding Hot Creek, The San Joaquin, and The East Walker. All of these rivers have been as good as it gets. I have been guiding Hot Creek Ranch all year and the fishing there the last two weeks has been borderline easy. That may sound a bit crazy, but the fish have been so gluttonous eating tricos in the morning and caddis the rest of the day that even beginners are having high fish days. The public section has been just as good both fishing dries and nymphing. The next few weeks should fish great with the caddis and beatis keeping the fish fat and happy. The San Joaquin is still full of water, although it seems to be getting lower everyday. We are still seeing some solid mayflys coming off all day. I have been doing quite a bit of hiking/guiding trips and fishing to some natives that have barely seen an angler all year. The East Walkers flows are amazing for October. Time so strip streamers!!! If you want to try to catch the trout of a lifetime streamer fishing on the EW in the fall is one of your best chances. I will be guiding up on the EW this week and hope to post some pictures of some beasts! Lets hope the algea on Crowley dies fast with the coldsnap. Crowley should fish really good as soon as it clears up. Some of the big lake fish are starting to move up into The Upper Owens, so time to strip some streamers on the “O” as well. Whether you need to improve your dry fly, nymphing, streamer swings, or lake fishing, I am here to help you!! Lets go fishing!! Nathan
